We are here to ask for your support to save the
Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Maryland.
This scenic tourist railroad offers a 16 mile excursion from Cumberland, Maryland to Frostburg, Maryland. There is a proposal to shorten (to 6 miles) or completely shut down this historic railroad to make way for a biking/hiking path. We are requesting your support to keep this Historic Scenic Railroad running in its full glory of 16 miles. The proposed hiking/biking path will destroy a historic Railroad and a Great Tourist Railroad! The only reason the railroad has to shut down or be greatly reduced it due to a tunnel; because the hiking path wants to share, or use the tunnels the Railroad owns and operates. If they are forced to shut down or reduce their line then the railroad tourism industry will take a big hit in Cumberland and Frostburg, and every town in between. In our opinion the proposal to save the hiking/ biking path 3 million dollars by using rail tunnels is too great. The cost to history, rail employees, the tourist’s economy, towns, residents, and railfans who love this railroad is too great to even measure. So I’ll put it this way, if the bike path goes in, the Railroad basically dies, whether in the next year or a long slow death in the next few years. Even if it survives nearly all the historic railfanning spots will be ruined or gone. Please join us in trying to save this historic, one of a kind tourist railroad. When you sign this petition, you help save a piece of American History. Thank you for your support in our effort to save the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. |

This petition is sponsored by a young railfan who has wonderful memories of this scenic railroad.
Unfortunately our scenic railroads are disappearing before our eyes.
He hopes that many others feel the same loss and will be inspired to join his cause to save United States Rail History. |
