The issue of solid waste in our community is increasingly worsening. Houston is soon to be the third largest city in the United States, and only has a recycling rate of 6%. That means that 94% of all solid waste is buried with horrendous environmental, financial, and social impacts to my community and surrounding Houston areas. EcoHub benefits all citizens by lowering emissions, conserving energy, saving space, creating jobs and growing our local economy. All of these benefits are available at a significant cost savings to the City of Houston and me, in comparison to the current waste and recycling programs.

EcoHub represents the end of garbage by turning Houston’s waste into resources and opportunity. EcoHub-Houston is an innovative collaboration of premier organizations, like IBM and Bloomberg’s C40 cities, working together to reclaim discarded resources instead of burying them. EcoHub allows every piece of the waste stream to be accurately diverted and re-purposed into its highest and best use, through clean and green technologies. Once sorted, these waste resources are available to be repurposed into new, viable products that will go directly to our local community – a true closed-loop solution for Houston’s growing waste disposal efforts. I no longer support burying good resources in landfills when there’s opportunity to create new jobs, improve my community, and provide millions for economic development in Houston.

Houston is a city of innovative firsts and it’s important that we remain ahead of the curve to remain competitive. Not only do we want a healthy and clean environment for everyone, but we want it to be something we can be proud of for the world to see. The City of Houston has the responsibility to support innovation that keeps us top of the list of world-class cities in every way.
