Dear Father Jenkins,
As a member of the Notre Dame family, I sign this petition requesting that you to do all in your power to refuse permission to the students and faculty who wish to provide sponsorship and a campus location for the performances of the Vagina Monologues.
Please know that I believe that a Catholic university should "guarantee its members academic freedom, so long as the rights of the individual person and of the community are preserved within the confines of the truth and the common good" (John Paul II, Ex Corde Ecclesiae).
However, the Vagina Monologues discards truth in an exceptionally lewd and dangerous manner. The play purports to reach out to the most vulnerable – female victims of rape – and suggests solace may be found in masturbation, lesbian activity, and contempt for men. Even the sexual exploitation of a young girl by a 24-year-old woman is glorified as a “salvation” – since the rapist shows the young girl enough “so [she'll] never need to rely on a man.”
The larger movement behind the play is even more troubling and antithetical to truth. The play's author calls for an end to violence against women, and that indeed is noble. But Ensler has sullied her noble cause with an unapologetic attack on Christianity.
I am thankful for your willingness to initiate an open discussion on the proper role of academic freedom in relation to the controversial student productions in question. I again request that you disallow the student-run, faculty-sponsored play, the V-Monologues, and any similar affronts to truth.
