Unity Pact: Compete, then Coalesce
Republicans,
As you know, we have a historical opportunity to remove from office our corrupt and inept governor, Gray Davis. However, we face a crisis that results from our running multiple candidates against a single Democrat challenger. The nightmare scenario is that Davis ally – Democrat Cruz Bustamante – becomes the next Governor of California because Republicans divide their votes amongst several candidates. An enormous amount of work went into making this recall election a reality and it would be a shame if all this effort was for naught.
It is imperative that we close ranks well enough before Election Day, giving the strongest GOP candidate enough time to challenge Bustamante directly. As a result, this “Unity Pact” petition encourages all major GOP candidates (in alphabetical order: Tom McClintock, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill Simon, Peter Ueberroth) to support the following process:

All candidates compete vigorously for the support of voters. The results of a poll by a reputable firm, surveying California registered voters as to which candidate they support for Governor, will be assessed. All candidates will abide by its results. The Republican candidate who has the greatest support represents our best chance of defeating Bustamante on Election Day and will be the consensus candidate of the GOP. The other serious Republican candidates agree to then bow out and support the consensus candidate. This unity will allow the GOP to speak with one voice in time for the scheduled televised debates.

This petition is a unity pact that encourages free and fair competition but calls for a coalescing process on September 9th so that we may give ourselves the best chance of winning on Election Day – October 7th. On September 9th, it is essential that candidates set aside their personal ambition for the best interests of the party and the state.
