Deborah BeckwinThe only application I actually enjoyed filling out was the Uncommon Application. It was one of the main attractive points for choosing U of C, because I felt like the College wanted to really get to know me and valued creativity. To use the Common Application seems a tad lazy and, well, common. We aren't like every other school--we ARE uncommon, and I'm proud of that! I hope that the administration would seriously reconsider using the common application and continue for U of C to be set apart, unique, and creative.

Christopher EspinalI, like most people, wanted to come to this school because it was distinct in that it is superior and unknown. Why should U of C conform for a bullshit number that doesn't mean anything but rankings that aren't true.

Jillian Rochat AurisanoThe Uncommon Application is one of the things that defines the UofC. It's one of the reasons we all ended up here. It's one of the reasons we all applied here. It's one of the reasons that our school is populated with fun, curious and interesting students. It's one of the things that makes the UofC what it is- unique. Don't let our school become like every other school- a collection of mediocre academic achievers taking general education courses in intro sociology and physics for poets making sure to leave plenty of time for enebriated Wednesdays. Higher ratings in the US News and World Reports are not worth it.

Kate Vavra-MusserThe nature of the uncommon application was one of the things that pulled me to coming to the University of Chicago.

Avital O'GlasserThe very principles behind the Uncommon Application were what led me to apply to the University of Chicago, and only the University of Chicago, for college. Now, more than 8 years later, I have even more respect for the Uncommon Application as a young professional. As an alumni interviewer, I have also found that those applicants who have the least appreciation for the essence of the Uncommon Application are those who I feel least likely to benefit from, thrive in, and contribute to the student body at the University of Chicago.

Jamie CrownI only applied to one school and it was the University of Chicago. The college makes it's unique character obvious to the prospective student through it's recruitment tools, letters from deans and students on the web site, and through the Uncommon Application and, because we have been able to make such a statement early on in the application process, I am sure that many students who could have gone to any school they wanted to attend chose Chicago exclusively. The uncommon application is one of the most important recruitment tools the university has. I put together what amounted to a 40 page book for the admissions committee. It really made me think about who i was and why i wanted to go to Chicago. After completing my application, I was so convinced that Chicago was the place for me that I decided not to send my wild and crazy application book anywhere else.

Adam KisselI am not sure that there is a formal proposal yet, but I am against getting rid of the uncommon application entirely. I am willing to consider a mixed application process that requires U of C-specific essays and perhaps other specific information, but which uses the common app for the sake of efficiency.

Seamus BartlettThe Univeristy of Chicago's application was perhaps the final straw that broke the camel's back, in a good way, to make me decide to go here. It was the inspiration for me writing a sestina as an application essay, because I felt like no other school would accept something so artistic, unusual, and creative. And that's what this school is. UChi is uncommon. UChi is a Phoenix dressed in maroon. UChi is where fun comes to die. UChi is uncommon.

Catherine BerjohnPlease maintain Chicago's distinctive character and spirit of inquiry by using a selection method that finds the uncommon students.

Ruth Klotz-ChamberlinPart of what makes the University of Chicago so special is the extraordinary students and faculty, dedicated to a lifetime of learning and questioning. If the University of Chicago gets rid of the uncommon application, we'll recruit common students, not extraordinary ones. The University of Chicago is unique, exclusive, uncommon--KEEP IT THAT WAY.
Anne T. PretzIt was precisely the Uncommon application that prompted me to consider Chicago. The intriguing questions and dry humor displayed in Chicago's materials were unlike anything other universities sent. As I wrote on my own application seven years ago, "When I saw Chicago's materials, I knew no other place would suit me so well." The Uncommon Application allows the student body to be self-selective and gives Chicago its quirky character that alumni so cherish. I would rather Chicago be ranked fiftieth than first if it meant my beloved alma mater would continue to attract students who are brilliant, funny, and totally unlike the airbrushed automatons at institutions who call themselves our peers. Take away the Uncommon Application, and in four years you will kill all that is dear and unique about our wonderful school. Anne T. Pretz A.B. 2004 Classical Studies, with honors

Kiran BanerjeeAs an alum of the University of Chicago, my commitment to supporting the University has been rather shaken by these recent trends.

joshua chettaThe adminstration has lost touch with the student body. In an attempt to pad the number of applicants and increase our ranking (by lowering the acceptance rate) they want to do away with one of the defining features of our undergraduate community. Stop trying to dilute the identity of our school.
J. Furman Daniel,III
Brinton AhlinThe Administration seems to have lost all regard for the educational values and heritage of this school. It is such a tragedy to prioritize college rankings against the very heart and soul of a great institution. Almost every university in America has succumbed to such baseless material goals, and it is so sad to see them attempt to destroy the University of Chicago in the same manner.

AnonymousThe UnCommon application panders to a different type of student. The admissions office I dealt with touted the "self-selective" nature of the students and the unique experience we have here should not be a mere click away.
Sarah ButlerEven if U of C keep the essay questions, the application cannot be called the Uncommon App anymore. And there is no such think as an Uncommon Supplement.
