A person who doesn't want to come to the U of C badly enough to work hard and come up with truly creative ideas for the uncommon application is not the kind of person I want for a classmate.
If the University has a sincere interest in making the school more accessible, it should eliminate or reduce the application fee or something like that - not mess around with an important and defining tradition.
Changing the application will only make it easier for wannabe Ivy Leaguers to make us their safety school. |

Overlooked is the fact that, in shooting for a larger number of better numbers, the very characteristic that separates students at the University of Chicago students from those at other elite schools will be tossed out the window.
The current application system demands high numbers (i.e., high marks and high scores) no differently than will the proposed system; it will therefore achieve but one change: an alteration of the school's personality. Chicago students, while being remarkably intelligent, are also remarkably unique; this factor is but the product of the Uncommon Application.
Gone will be originality and here will be the mediocrity that commonality, that great middling force, engenders. |

| 92 | Mae Lindsey | The University should certainly take steps to encourage lower-income students to apply, but the way to do that is NOT through using the Common Application.
Using the Common Application would increase the raw number of applicants who apply - thus making the UoC appear more selective - but it would greatly damage the University's unique and widely-praised student experience by diluting the number of students who come to the UoC specifically for its challenging, high-intensity curriculum.
It's no coincidence that we have both the U.S.'s #1 undergraduate experience and the joking motto "Where fun comes to die." The vast majority of students here genuinely love learning and challenging themselves - how could we ask for a better student mix? And how could we risk that environment by accepting applications who are just "clicking down the line" of schools who accept Common Applications?
Filling out the Uncommon Application is NOT any sort of appreciable burden on lower-income students.

The school has character and reputation because the leaders of this school have never been willing to submit to mainstream education. We dropped out of the big ten, we continue to require core classes, things like this are what make The University of Chicago special. I believe that the uncommon application is also a way that this University has maintained it's individuality, and getting rid of that application would be to sell a piece of the school's greatness. |
