Brendan Colson | The Common Application is a great thing for common schools. But this is not a common school, this is the University of Chicago. The Uncommon Application makes us unique. Also, our application filters out those who are only applying because it was 'on the Common App'. People who fill out the Uncommon Application are going out of their way to fill out a separate application because it means something to them, they want to get into this University. The Uncommon Application makes sure that people who apply really want to go here.
| 854 | Priyanka Kumar | To Whom It May Concern:
I believe I understand at least some of the motives behind the administration's interest in moving to the common application. Nonetheless, I the Uncommon Application is too much of a U of C tradition to dispense with in the hopes of making the College a more popular and easily accessible college application choice among high school seniors. The Uncommon App forces students to be original with their essay responses, and requires that they take the time to fill out an application that ultimately distinguishes those students who really want to come here from those that are simply not as interested. |

Erin Mowers | The Uncommon Application is one of the reasons WHY I applied to this university. The extra effort it requires of its applicants is reflected in the quality of the university's students.

Irina Kozyrkov | The University of Chicago should be proud of the essays it assigns on the Uncommon Application and should not deny itself the opportunity to test potential students on their ability to respond to such excellent prompts.
| 863 | Andrew Ellefson | The uncommon application is part of what makes Chicago special. Don't change that. Don't join the sheep just to get a little higher in rankings.

Patricia Padurean | Don't take away from our quirkiness! It should take more thought to apply here than just the click it would take to add UChicago to the list of other colleges on the Common App website!
Mingzhu He |
Aaron Wilson | The application is the first thing most prospective students see and needs to indicate as much about the University as possible. I wouldn't have applied to Chicago if it had been just another Common App school, but the Uncommon App was something new and different and actually engaged my interest. It was the only application (out of 12) that I enjoyed working on. Moving to Common App would be a massive mistake.

| 875 | Yelena McElwain | I believe that the University of Chicago provided undergraduate with a truly unique experience. The Uncommon Application allows for that experience to begin even before one enters the College. It has grown to be one the main traditions and aspects of the university, not unlike The Aims of Education address and Scav Hunt. Indeed, as President Zimmer pointed out, the Uncommon App does ask for some regular information. Having a page for your name and high school information is unavoidable in an application. However, it is the whole application that matters because it is so well structured and very cohesive. Breaking it up into the Common App plus some essays would ruin this feeling and take away from the traditions. This seems like a very high cost to pay just to attract the applicants who were not willing to take fifteen minutes to fill out the application in the first place. An applicant who does not want to spare so few moments can hardly care very much for the University of Chicago.
The Uncommon App was the only application that made me laugh. For me and many other students, it was one of the major factors contributing to the decision to come to the U of C. I hope that in the pursuit of higher rankings, the University does not forget about its best and most unique aspects like the Uncommon Application. |

Hal Gordon | Keep the uncommon application!
Fatima |
Adam Rudnicki | Please do not get rid of the uncommon application--it is why I applied here in the first place, why I came, and how I discovered this university.
Katy Burnett |
Eva Addae | The uncommon Application was the reason I found this school fascinating and worthy to attend. It saved me from endless hours of repetitive answers about things that I was not interested in when applying to Universities. It continues to be the key magnet to drawing in wonderful prospective students who appreciate its uniqueness. I feel as though it is an intrinsic part of why this University stands above the rest.
Joshua Baxter | Please don't do away with the uncommon application for the sake of getting more applicants to apply for the sake of a higher USNandWR ratings.
shuaib ahmed | part of what makes this place so amazing is the people that come here are the most interesting They have unique and creative ways of looking at everything in the world from economics to anthro. Part of selecting fo this individual is the uncommon app. which gives you a chance to express yourself in a creative way, yet still showcase your intellect.
Miriam Bodenheimer | When people ask me how I would describe U of C students, the word that always comes to mind is "passionate." In order to ensure that the student body stays passionate, I think it's important to keep the UnCommon Application - if students really care about the U of C, they should be willing to fill out an extra 4 pages of personal information. Don't encourage people to apply just because it's easy to add another school to the Common Application. How should those students ever be happy at the U of C?
Chris Miller |
Stacey Schriber | One reason the Uncommon Application is great is that it helps students really decide if this school is right for them before they apply. I think that many more students would be unhappy with their decision to come here if they had been able to fill out one general application.
Helen Kendall |
Michael Gundlach | SAVE THE UNCOMMON APP!!
Lowell Switzer | To the University of Chicago administration: please do not abandon the uncommon application. It is the application that helps filter U Chicago students. The application is designed to limit the applicant pool to those who have a genuine interest in attending this prestigious institution, not just those who scored well on standardized tests and figured they would apply to yet another top-ranked school. Furthermore, to those students who are still uncertain about whether they would want to attend this school, the uncommon application serves as a reason to prefer. The uncommon app shows how U Chicago is interesting and distinct from other institutions. If the application appeals to a student, then it might solidify their decision to apply and, given an acceptance, attend the University. If, however, the application annoys or generates some sense of distaste, then the uncommon app has shown the applicant that U Chicago's personality might not be what he or she is looking for in a school. In either case, the uncommon application is quintessential to Chicago. It is a tradition in "pre-sorting" to see if students have "the right stuff." Without the uncommon app, a cornerstone of Chicago's character will be missing. Please do not make this mistake.
Amanda Machin | I came to this university because I felt that a school that asked me meaningful questions on my application would be more interesting to attend, and so far that's been true. I'd be very disappointed in the University if it did away with the Uncommon application, many alumni would be far less inclined to support the College Fund. I would be one of those alumni.

Joseph Banks, AB 97 | The Uncommon Application influenced my decision to come to U of C. No other school had such a "cool" application. I still read the questions almost every year and boast to others about the U of C application. There is always a suitable option for the unadventurous to choose. Don't spoil it for the rest of the applicants--the ones who really belong at the U of C.
Caroline Peters | The Uncommon Application is the UChicago method of separating those students that "look good on paper" from those truly creative and intellectual minds we seek to make up our student body. Without the Uncommon Application it becomes considerably more difficult for applicants and admissions advisers to demonstrate and percieve these qualities in the application process.
