This petition is being written in efforts to get the mandatory laptop fee reduced or completely thrown out.
It is mandatory for UOIT students to have laptops in order for them to be a registered student “Participation in the Mobile Learning Environment is a mandatory requirement at UOIT”. Since it is a mandatory requirement, the costs should fit the program; meaning law students shouldn’t pay the same as engineering students “Note this is the average retail cost per student but can vary significantly based on the academic program. Significant educational discounts are provided to keep the cost as low as possible within the Mobile Program.” (This is not the case). Also, for it to be a mandatory requirement, the school should be responsible for paying a partial amount of the $1,480.00 laptop fee (this price is increasing September 2005).

In order for laptop fees to be as low as possible, students should be able to purchase their own up-to-date laptops (which meet UOIT requirements), and be charged for the licensing under UOIT. This would greatly reduce the fee for the mobile environment.
We are students of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology/Durham College, and because of that, every possible step should be taken to make our educational experience as inexpensive, educational and enjoyable as possible. So if you feel as strongly as I do about the mobile learning program as I do, take the first step and sign the petition. |
