Present Suggestions to UCR Administration

The administration is seeking the input of students to offer potential solutions to what they perceive as problems. You may post your suggestions below. Outlined below are some of the reasons that the administration stated for changing the commencement policy.

When the commencement ceremony was originally being planned, the administration was under the impression that the commons area was going to be under construction, and that the outdoor location would not be available. That construction has since been postponed, and will not take place before graduation. Why then weren't the plans changed accordingly to revert back to the way commencement has always taken place?

According to the administration, it was repeatedly mentioned at the forum that the budget was not a factor that was considered in moving the ceremony indoors (although this is what the commencement.ucr.edu website states). Instead, they said that "saving $40,000 was merely an added bonus." I pointed out that the administration risks alienating the Class of 2004, and will face a loss of long-term alumni support that would far exceed $40,000.

The administration continued to take the stance that the weather in June is hot, despite alternatives that have worked well in the past such as placing monitors in the commons cafeteria, where individuals can take a break from the heat, and yet continue to watch the ceremony.

The graduating classes are larger resulting in longer ceremonies.
