The Little Rock Zoo, along with more than 200
accredited zoos nationwide, is joining the effort to
ask Congress to increase federal dollars for the
Multinational Species Conservation Fund. This fund is
administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
and is dedicated to five types of endangered animals:
African elephants, Asian elephants, rhinoceros,
tigers, and great apes. These funds have been
crucial in supporting the survival of these animals in
the wild, with a proven track record of success for
more than 14 years. However, in order to continue protecting
these endangered species, Congress must spend
more on this vital program.
The Little Rock Zoo and the American Zoo and
Aquarium Association (AZA) are asking you to sign a
petition asking Congress to increase federal funding
for this program to 2 million per animal. That's a
grand total of 10 million dedicated for the protection
of endangered species in our world! In terms of
government spending, this is a small number, but this
amount of funds will make a lasting impact on the
survival of these beautiful and important
animals.
