9 Ira Helfand, MDUSMAEmergency PhsyicianAs a US citizen I fully understand the primary role played by my government in fueling nuclear proliferation by refusing to renounce its own nuclear option. But while the UK is not as culpable, it has also contributed to the danger of nuclear war by clinging to its nuclear arsenal long after the end of the Cold War. The UK now has an opportunity to do an enormous service to mankind by becoming the first major nuclear power to move towards implementation of its responsibilities under Article VI of the NPT. In doing so it will provide a powerful impetus to efforts to realistically address the problem of nuclear proliferation and the continued danger of nuclear war.
