Petition to the City of Toronto and the Chief of Police to take effective action to prevent bicycle theft in the City
We are cyclists, and family and supporters of cyclists, who are unhappy about the rate of bicycle theft in Toronto.
Bicycles are good for the environment and good for our health. However, the continuing and prevalent bicycle theft in the City of Toronto and the apparent lack of a concerted effort to stop it are a major problem for cyclists. It is very upsetting to have your bicycle stolen, most bicycles are not insured, the cost of a new bicycle and accessories on average is about$500 and many people pay far more, and for many cyclists their main form of transportation is gone.
It appears that bicycle theft despite its significant impact on many individuals and families is not taken seriously. Until bicycle theft is under control this City cannot reasonably be said to support and encourage cycling. We therefore urge the City and the Chief of Police to work together and with members of the cycling community to come up with effective strategies to prevent bicycle theft.
This petition will be sent to the Mayor, City Councillors and the Chief of Police as well as selected staff at both the City and the Police Department by January 15th 2006 |

This petition is sponsored by Mary Neumann (mneumann@rogers.com), a resident of Toronto.
In the last twenty four hours the only two bicycles in my household were stolen in two separate incidents and they were both locked up - one from the yard behind the house and the other on Bloor Street near Yonge. The bike I lost was the third one I had had stolen in thirteen months. This petition along with letters I have already sent to the Mayor, the Police Chief, the Co-Chair of the Toronto Cycling Committee and my ward councillor, is my effort to do somthing about it and not just complain to my friends. |
