Mr Simpkins,
Someone once said, “I think history is inextricably linked to identity. If you don't know your history, if you don't know your family, who are you?”, this is the reason why what you did means so much not only to the hundreds of thousands of Australians of Macedonian descent, but also to the Macedonian Diaspora worldwide and to Macedonians in Macedonia.
Many of us are immigrants to Australia and have grown to love it. Many more Macedonians around the world are immigrants in countries such as the United States, Canada and the UK. Although as immigrants we love our adopted lands and identify with their history and cultures, we still cannot forget our past, our forefathers and our history, for they are an integral part of who we are.
A person’s history is a part of a person’s identity. Australia like other countries around the world is a multicultural society built throughout the years by the hands of its immigrant workers. Our ancestors moved to this great land in search of a better life, a life which they found. As Australian-Macedonians we love this country and are proud of it; we respect it and all we ask for is respect in return.
Macedonia’s constitutional name is recognised by many of the countries in which Macedonians are a sizeable minority, including the United States, Canada and the UK. Australia is home to the largest Macedonian population outside of the Republic of Macedonia, yet the Australian Government has blatantly refused to acknowledge our existence by denying our right to self determination, a fundamental principle of democracy. Many Macedonians fled Greece because of this breach of democratic principles, only to be met with the same resistance in recognition by the Australian government decades later.
Mr Simpkins, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your courage and support. Take comfort in knowing that what you did was just, and you have given hope to hundreds and thousands of Macedonians throughout Australia and the world. We hope your actions were not in vain and that eventually the Australian government will also stand up for that which is right.
Thank you once again, you have our utmost support.
