TAKE A STAND FOR MARYLAND FOOTBALL

Dear Athletic Director Yow and Coach Friedgen:
We are the most passionate of Maryland Football fans. We live for football gamedays in College Park. We want to make Byrd Stadium a great home environment for our Terps and a very tough place for our opponents to play.
Over the last several years, we have become very frustrated when our attempts to stand and generate noise in support of our Terps from the crowd at Byrd have been met with the inevitable "Sit down" from spectators sitting behind us. Our attempts to cheer for our Terps have been repeatedly received with "Be quiet," quizzical looks, and worst of all silence from evidently less enthusiastic spectators. We respect those spectators for supporting Maryland Football by purchasing tickets and attending the games, however we feel their lack of participation in the game and their silence in the stands detracts from making Byrd a great home environment, and it detracts from our enjoyment of the game.
According to the Sept. 25 edition of Vertical Alliance’s Sports Marketing and Ticketing Newsletter, like-minded football fans at the University of Notre Dame successfully petitioned the athletic department to designate a section of Notre Dame Stadium as standing-only, where fans in this section stand and cheer throughout the entire game, similar to the students. Demand for "seats" in this 1,700-seat section of the stadium Notre Dame calls Alumni Alley has been tremendous, according to the newsletter.
We, the undersigned, want to Take a Stand for Maryland Football. We ask you to designate a section in Byrd Stadium, preferably in the lower bowl, as standing-only, similar to the Notre Dame section described above. Please give us diehard, enthusiastic Terp fans a home where we can freely stand together and cheer for our Terps throughout the entire game, without having to argue with spectators as to whether we should be standing or seated on any given play.
We believe with our word-of-mouth and marketing by the University of Maryland athletic department, this new section will sell out continually. We suggest giving this section a name (Red Zone, Byrd’s Bleacher Bums, etc.) and selling tickets to this section on a season-ticket basis, with an option on ticket brochures for fans to request their seats be in this section.
We hope to see this section become a reality beginning with the 2003 season.
