Dear Mr. Cooper:
I am writing to add my voice to what I hope are ultimately hundreds of voices speaking on behalf of the Duke Lacrosse Team and specifically on behalf of one of the three young men who have been formally – and not only unjustly but very likely illegally – accused.
There is no shortage of information in the lay press attesting to the dubious nature of the victim’s claims and the questionable character of those who have come forward to fan the flames for her. But I am writing to attest to the impeccable character of one of the young men – Reade Seligman. I find it simply incomprehensible that he might ever even be considered capable of committing the type of crime with which he has been charged. He is a soft-spoken, intelligent young man who is a faithful friend and committed, monogamous boyfriend who would never harm anyone verbally, much less physically.
I beg you to investigate Mr. Nifong’s motives, methods, and actions and to involve yourself – with the intent of righting – what has become, literally, a travesty of justice in Durham.
