Gary TiplerIt's unfortunate that the City of Madison may have met the letter of the law while avoiding upholding the intent of the law. "It said that, through Christ, what has been destroyed could be rebuilt and that what has grown old could be given new life." - Pope John Paul II, Easter Address, Sunday, 27 March, 2005. Note: St. Raphael’s burned March 14, 2005. Pope John Paul II died April 2, 2005.

AnnWe have destroyed too much of downtown Madison. My parents, grandparents, great grandparents and great-great grandparents (along with tons of aunts, uncles, etc.) were all baptized there. It's an important piece of history for all of Madison, but particularly for the one time residents of the "bloody fourth."
AnonymousWith tradition so integral to the mission of the Church and its teaching, how can we allow the destruction to occur?
carolyn freiwaldThe church has a long history and should demonstrate its vested interest in Madison by retaining a landmark building.

Salvatore CalominoI was really quite surprised to hear of this news (only today) and was grateful for the opportunity to add my voice to those in opposition to the demolition. It would be a shocking loss to the sense of history (since it does not really count as private property), and I simply hope the diocese exercises better judgement in this than it has in its involvement in other recent political campaigns in the state. Thank you.
David WaughThey don't build them like they used to. The aesthetic value of landmark buildings translates to dollars for the city of Madison. Let's not let this one fade into memory.
AnonymousPLEASE don't take the decision to permanently obliterate history so lightly. Those walls were good for 150 years, and I'll bet they are still good for another 150 if handled correctly!
fae dremockDowntown history need not be sold off to the highest bidder-- or demolished. That "ruin" could become a landmark park; it could add yet another small patch of green in the tree mosaic that extends between the new E. Wash Build and the university, and it could easily prove a small draw for tourists. Part of the pubic art downtown should include historic architecture, even at times its ruins. Please don't relegate another piece to downtown history to the trash bin.
AnonymousPlease don't demolish St. Raphael's.

Jim KalrathIt seems to me there should be a way to re-build this neat building.

Joan HartSt. Raphael's Cathedral was built close to the Capitol to establish a strong recognition of a religious presence in the new state of WI. Its stone walls should remain intact to give historical testimony.
Simon AndersonThis should be thought through as to what to do to reuse/incorporate/restore/leave-as-is before preci[itous tear-down!
AnonymousI would also support an alternative use of the remaining structure such as a residential or commercial use if the diocese has no use for it.

Brock RiebeThis is an irreplaceable historical landmark. This should be stopped immediately. This is a disgrace on Madison.
Jef HindsStop the demolition immediately.
Mary Beckerthis church is very important to madison. always has been and needs to be in madison's future. do what has to be done to save st raphael!
Michael Fumelleit is a beautiful, significant piece of our local heritage . it would be a sin to demolish it.

Elizabeth KerwinAs a native Madisonian, I care deeply about the fabric of my city and the health of all faith communities. The Bishop has shown again and again that he is working with neither the interests of the city, or even his own diocese, in mind. He doesn't care and isn't a man of honor. To let him make such a colossal mistake would be a sin. This is the same kind of decision that people in the future will say - they did, WHAT?!?! The building of the Burger King on University Ave. comes to mind...

Donna AsifI totally agree with the contents and position of this petition. This is far too precious a landmark to destroy. Take example from may historic, even ancient remains of significant and beautiful structures in other parts of the world. Let them stand to inspire and uplift, to delight and comfort our community for all time. This is a magnificent opportunity to turn around what might otherwise be remembered for awhile as pure disaster, followed by no memory whatsoever. It will become a tourist destination. It is a jewel of aesthetic and archetectural excellence. It must be kept.
Jim SkrentnyFor more than 3 years the walls defied the elements seeming to say help me, save me, let me continue to stand for generations. I am saddened by the news of its demolition but am still hopeful that something can be done to save some of this worthy building.
