In fact, I believe that some of the space should be set aside for a separate bike lane which separates bicyclists and pedestrians from the car traffic. Thank you. |

Children will also be trying to get to school during peak times, so we need to make sure that those in a rush to get to work will stop and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks in the absence of signals. Consideration could even be given to adding pedestrian signals and stop lights at the crosswalks on the legs of the intersections which would be activated when a pedestrian needs to cross.) Otherwise will there be sufficient gaps in traffic for non-motorized travelers to navigate the intersection safely? All pedestrians and bicyclists should be able to travel safely through the area. |

Here are some ideas not yet discussed:
1. Put in the roundabout NOW. It was silly to build the intersection at Rock Haven but I guess they had to if they were going to open the school on time. No need to wait for a NC DOT project to fix a critical intersection, just DO it.
2. CLOSE the illegal landfill masquerading as a 'gravel pit' just south of the high school ... OWASA admits they have no jurisdiction over what gets dumped there, adjacent to University Lake reservoir, and the dump trucks all unload there on the 'honor system' ... if you don't believe me, go look for yourself ... lines of 20 and 50 ton dump trucks, speeding on a country road at all hours, and NOBODY says a word about it, WHY??
3. Put a traffic light in at Damascus Church Road, and time it so as to gate traffic to the north ... it will act as a capacity buffer and encourage the use of 15-501 instead of Smith Level as an access to Carrboro, plus improve safety at a nightmarish intersection, do this IMMEDIATELY and watch the improvement in 1 week.
4. ENFORCE the speed limit on Smith Level Road!! We have laws in the country for a reason, let's try a bit of common sense and enforce the ones we have. |

| 118 | Melissa Kroeger | For the safety and enjoyment of Chapel Hill citizens residing along Smith Level Road, the plan for three lanes should be abandoned. With the new commercial development underway just over the Chatham County line, every effort should be made to discourage the use of Smith Level Road for heavy commerical use. You have a unique opportunity to preserve some of Chapel Hill's remaining, unspoiled rural neighborhoods. Please remember that we choose to live there for that reason.
Thank you. |

| 122 | Anonymous | We are looking to better the road for pedestrians and bicyclists i.e. to make it easier for children and parents to travel to school and from school by foot (promoting a healthier living). Putting more lanes there defeats the object of refurbishing that road, You are just inviting more cars to use that piece of road when it is already busy enough.. I'm sure the more roads you put in the more danger you put pedestrians and bicyclists in!...by not accommodating the cyclist and pedestrians. Therefore the bike lanes and sidewalks will probably be put on a back burner and that is not what OUR comunity wants, Please take into account the safety and wishes of the town! After all it is our doorstep that you will be improving. |

Smith Level Road NEEDS to be improved (adding bike lanes, left turn lanes, traffic calming round abouts, etc), but NOT widened for the sake of carrying more cars! 15-501 is perfectly adequate for that.
Do not make us victim to your petty squabbles. Do everyone who lives their life along SLR the favor and the courtesy of respecting our wishes. Improve our community now! |
