It is essential to have your voice heard if you want this small dog park. We, as small dog lovers/owners, need to convince the Austin Parks and Recreation Department that having a special designated area at the existing off-leash parks for small dogs is essential to our community. Let your voices be heard, sign this petition and get your neighbors and friends to sign too.
Austin already has 12 off-leash parks around the city--which is great. Yet there is not one place in Austin to safely take small dogs to play with eachother off-leash. Small dogs cannot safely play in the same areas as larger dogs.
Therefore, we are asking the Austin Parks and Recreation Department to construct an enclosed small dog area at one or many of the existing off-leash parks for the following reasons:
+ There is not a facility in Austin to accommodate safe, small dog "off-leash" activity
+ Small dogs need exercise over and above human limitations; leashes limit the dog’s space and pace
+ Socializing small dogs is very beneficial to the community, since it makes them less skittish and mitigates aggressive behavior when meeting other dogs and people
+ The cardiovascular effect is great for the dog's longevity and weight control, and the overall effect makes most dogs calmer and better behaved
+ There is a large community of small dog owners and such a facility would increase park utilization and increase interaction among families in the community |

I own a 6 month old Papillon (4 lbs.) named Chili and have been wanting to take her outside to play off-leash. I have visited many of Austin's area parks and have been unable to even set her down without multiple large breeds bombarding us--I know this is out of love--but one accidental move and Chili could get very hurt. She is extremely active and loves to play. If you are in the same situation - please contact me at barkforsmalldogs@hotmail.com |
