Save a shark - buy something from Louis Vuitton or Chanel instead!

Shark fin soup is a translucent gluey soup containing strands of shark fin. It is served during Chinese New Year, weddings and special occasions. More recently, with the growing wealth in China, Shark fin soup has become a symbol of wealth and class.

The cruelty behind what looks like a bowl of harmless goo is that sharks have their fins are sliced off and thrown back to sea finless and unable to swim.

Shark fin is actually tasteless like vermicelli. While shark fin is rich in protein, there is no scientific proof that shark fin contains extraordinary health benefits or nutritional value that can not be found in regular meat.

The World Conservation Union has appealed to the European Union to stop exporting shark fins to China because of the drastic drop in the number of sharks. It is estimates that over 7,257 tonnes of shark fins are processed each year -- and 181,487 tonnes of shark carcasses are discarded at sea. It says 18 species are already listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature*.
