We the undersigned petitioners respectfully call upon the City of Moreland to allocate the necessary funds to re-open the Coburg Olympic Pool for the 2008/09 summer season.

The Coburg Olympic Pool was built in 1964 through local community initiative and fund-raising. It is situated on the banks of the Merri Creek, shaded by lush peppercorn trees and framed by grasslands. The facility includes a toddler\'s pool, children\'s pool, diving pool, and the only 50 metre pool in the area. The Coburg Olympic Pool\'s unique site and heritage have made it a much-loved local public asset. In December 2006, the City of Moreland closed the pool without warning. It cited leakages and promised to repair the pool. The following summer, the facility was closed for a second summer season. This time the Council claimed that water restrictions prohibited the re-filling of the pools. The Council has since retracted this incorrect statement. The future of Coburg Olympic Pool now hangs in the balance. It will cost the Council $355,000 to repair and restore the pools after years of neglect. Council will be voting on whether to allocate these funds in their upcoming Budget. The development of the Pentridge and Kodak sites, demographic changes in the region and climate change realities mean that more people will be seeking the social, recreational and health benefits of a local outdoor pool than ever before. Friends of the Coburg Olympic Pool have been campaigning to re-open the pool using the slogan: You Can\'t Swim in a Promise. For more info please visit http://www.savecoburgolympicpool.org/
