We the undersigned call on the Board of the Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries to respect their by-laws as well as the community and families who utilize the grounds for purposes of mourning the loss of loved ones and enjoying passive recreation and sanctuary. It therefore follows that building an approximately 24,000 sq foot building and an 82-car parking lot on what is currently greenspace encompassing the Beltline/Discovery Trail, removing 123 trees, shrubs and woody plants and disrupting the “animal and bird migration corridor” to the ravine system, is unacceptable.
Be it resolved that we the undersigned urge you to protect this natural and vulnerable landscape upon which the “Visitation Centre” is to be built and refrain from this development.
“One of the great advantages which lot owners in these cemeteries possess is the public character of the Trust, and the fact that its funds are used solely for the purposes of administration and ornamentation and improvement of the grounds.” Pg. 7 of the Rules and Regulations of The Trustees of the Toronto General Burying Grounds, (a.k.a. Mt. Pleasant Cemetery), 1914 |
