The petition
As individual citizens and organizations committed to a healthy and vibrant Anacostia community and river, we are writing to ask you to stop the stadium giveaway that is being orchestrated in Anacostia National Park at Poplar Point. This stadium and related development would consume 40 acres of riverfront parkland, reducing this publicly owned resource from 110 acres to 70 acres, and would be of little benefit to the existing community.
Hundreds of community residents attended the public meeting on this issue at Ballou High School on January 20, and the voice of the community was loud and clear in stating that a soccer stadium should not be built on parkland. Many called for all 110 acres of the parkland to be protected and restored, noting the ample opportunity for jobs, retail, and other economic development that could be realized on the 40 acres surrounding the park.
