The National Weather Service Duties Act of 2005, Senate Bill S.786, proposes that the National Weather Service discontinue many services that people depend on in their daily lives.
The collection of this information, including weather observations, satellite images and radar images, is all paid for by the taxpayers. Under this proposal, processing and distribution of this information would have to be done by private weather companies, notably AccuWeather of State College Pennsylvania, and other services. This would make this kind of data inaccessible to people who cannot afford to pay for a private weather service.
This legislation was introduced by Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pennsylvania. This petition will be forwarded to the Senator and other members of the Commerce Committee.
