Oxford City Council is planning to close Temple Cowley Swimming Pool, the only facility in the Oxford area with capacity for holding swimming galas. This is part of a strategic review of leisure facilities. At the moment they are reviewing the cost of refurbishment against building a completely new pool in Blackbird Leys, well away from the current catchment area.
It is likely that they will set the refurbishment costs higher than the rebuild costs; this is because by closing the pool they would be able to sell the land for more housing and provide access to a currently vacant green field site behind the pool. The council's idea of refurbishment is to take out the single sex changing areas and replace them with a "village" style, with a collection of unisex cubicles.
