Show your support for the drive against corruption in Bangladesh:

On February 6th, 2008, the High Court (HC) in Bangladesh ruled an extortion lawsuit against Sheikh Hasina of the Awami League under the Emergency Power Rules (EPR) as illegal. This serves a devastating blow to the much awaited reforms that were initiated by Caretaker Government (CG) under Chief Advisor Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed and assisted by the Army chief Moeen U. Ahmed. The HC ruling may affect the 150 or so other corruption cases initiated by the CG against the most corrupt politicians and business people of the country.

It is no big secret or surprise that Bangladesh ranked 1st for 3 consecutive years as the most corrupt nation in the world. It is widely known that the previous governments of Khaleda Zia (BNP) and Sheikh Hasina (Awami League) siphoned billions of government dollars by awarding contracts illegally to companies owned by their relatives and friends and openly extorted money from companies operating in the country. The CG's decision to file cases against the corrupt politicians and business people is an important and necessary step in removing corruption from the country and putting Bangladesh on the path to economic and social success. Corruption has completely eaten away at the social fabric of society and has left most of the poor people in Bangladesh hostage to the politicians who control the government's resources for political and personal wealth gains. The actions being taken by the current caretaker government are arguably the most important reforms being taken since the independence of Bangladesh.

This online petition was started by a small group of students in Sylhet, Dhaka and NRB's residing in North America and UK. This petition is neither endorsed nor has been created with the permission of any political body in Bangladesh.

JIST: The CG has already had many successes in implementing laws that will benefit the people of Bangladesh in general and not any particular political party. The intentions thus far seem real and the Chief Adviser and his team of Advisors have already had immense success in running the country the way that is should be. For the first time in Bangladesh's history, the country is being run by a truly qualified and educated group that understand the local needs of the people and have been putting together a strong foreign policy that will benefit Bangladesh in the short and long term.

The HC ruling has the potential to ruin all of these valuable advances and return Bangladesh to the poor situation it was in before the CG came into office. There is very little we can do from living abroad, however, we truly believe that we should voice our support for the CG in carrying on its reform and development projects. With this in mind, we have created this online petition as a simple way of voting our support for Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed's caretaker government.

By signing this petition, we are making the following statements:

1) We fully support and agree with the Caretaker Government's drive against corrupt politicians and business people in Bangladesh. We feel that this process should continue and demand the resumption of the corruption trials currently in court.

2) We fully support the economic and social reform policies taking place in Bangladesh and initiated by the caretaker government and feel that they should continue.
