The legal system in Nigeria is being used to punish adult women for consenual sex. In March 2002, a Sharia court sentenced 30-year old Amina Lawal to death for having sex outside of marriage. The government used her pregnancy as evidence of having committed adultery. Ms. Lawal now has a 8-month old daughter. In June the court postponed her execution until January 2002 until Amina finishes breastfeeding her daughter.
This sentence must not be carried out. In an attempt to show support for Amina, I have initiated this petition against Nigerian officials, Kanu Godwin Agabi, Minister of Justice and Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim and His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, President of the Republic. This is not the way of a civilized people. I will send the petition every 3 months until the charges against Amina are dropped and she is free. |

I am an individual who has taken it upon myself to do something against this threatened crime against another human being and a mother of an 8-month old child. There has to be some other resolution of the situation. The powers in Nigeria have to be confronted and made accountable for its decision. This petition, however, may be able to save Amina's life and show that others care what happens to her and her daughter. |
