Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks' arrest for refusing to yield her seat on the bus in the racially segregated bus system in Montgomery, Alabama touched off the 1955 Bus Boycott. It was this boycott that launched our country's Civil Rights Movement. The quiet courage of one woman changed the course of American History and came to symbolize the power of a non-violent protest and demonstrated the impact one person taking a stand for justice can have. Rosa Parks continues to dedicate her life to universal human rights and has become a living icon for freedom.

Our country continues to commit a grave injustice by not having even one national holiday recognizing the contributions of a woman. Let's correct that and at the same time honor Rosa Parks. Let's celebrate her stand for human rights by making her birthday, February 4, the first national holiday which recognizes the heroic contributions of a woman, one who takes a stand for the dignity and future happiness of all people and contributes immeasurably to our country's greatness. We, the undersigned, do hereby support making Rosa Parks' birthday a national holiday.
