Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)
IN THE MATTER OF UGANDANS IN THE DIASPORA DEMANDING TO EXECISE THEIR DEMOCRATIC RIGHT TO VOTE IN THE 2006 GENERAL ELECTIONS
AND
IN THE MATTER OF A PETITION SEEKING YOUR INDULGENCE TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE FACILITATED TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS AS BY LAW ESTABLISHED.
The Chairman,
Electoral Commission,
Plot 53/56 Jinja Road,
P.O Box 22678,
Kampala, Uganda
May It Please Your Office!
PETITION
Your Petitioners are Ugandan citizens of diverse socio-political backgrounds who are currently living in the Diaspora, and have, owing to their inherent and undisputed stake in the socio, political and economic destiny of their motherland, have found it necessary to strongly address your good office through this FDC sponsored petition as hereunder.
Your Petitioners contend:
1. THAT following recent revelations by their government in the media, they have cause to believe that they, as major stakeholders in the destiny of Uganda may be time barred (by omission or design) by law from participating in activities designed to shape the democratic future of Uganda.
2. THAT to wit, they have cause to believe that they may not be able to return to Uganda before the October 28th 2005 statutory deadline to register as voters for purposes of participating in the forthcoming general elections in 2006.
3. THAT this is a matter of grave concern to them not only as citizens of Uganda who wish it well, but also as people who have contributed heavily into Uganda’s economy, have invested heavily in Uganda, and therefore have a vested interest in the political stability of the country without which there can be no talk of economic stability and growth.
WHEREFORE, and in light of the above contentions, your Petitioners pray that your office does everything possible to ensure that:
•Arrangements are made forthwith to expeditiously facilitate their registration as voters at Uganda’s foreign missions around the world that are nearest to them for purposes of participating in the forthcoming elections;
•Thereafter, arrangements are put in place to enable them vote for a political party and or candidate of their choice in a free, fair and democratic manner;
•In furtherance thereof, every registered and participating political party, be facilitated to present and maintain an election monitor to cater for its interests during the said elections.
SO IS OUR HUMBLE PRAYER.
