| 27 | William Jackson | To whom it may be concerned,
My occasion to write to you this time is about (HCR) 487 and the reason I have the desire to see this resolution successfully passed. I am very concerned that our national interests are not served by President Bush's dialogue with Canada and Mexico, on the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SSP) initiative.
This concurrent resolution (HCR) 487 expresses the sense that the Congress should express that the United States should not engage in the construction of a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA ) Superhighway System or enter into a North American Union with Mexico and Canada.
I wholeheartedly support (HCR) 487 and want to work towards its successful implementation and the subsequent defeat of Bush’s proposed North American Union.
I have been a computer technology worker since 1979, starting my career in the United States Navy, as a computer technician. Since my separation from the armed services in 1992 (after 2 deployments in the Persian Gulf 89-90, 90-91 Desert Shield and Storm), I have seen many computer technology employment opportunities fulfilled by H-1B visa holders, who can barely speak intelligible English.
These positions are then subsequently out-sourced to the country of the H-1B visa holder, because of this language gap. This does not give our separated veterans an “even-playing” field, because this H-1B visa holder is now the hiring manager and can find plenty of people who are willing to work for less, in his/her mother country.
At this time, most computer technology employment opportunities are not even competitive in nature, if even advertised. These positions are just sent to the subsidiary locations and filled for 1/3 the labor costs, which results in higher profitability for the company, but increased under-employment in the US. How can we continue to say, “We support our troops!!”, when those troops return home to limited or no opportunities?
Is it little wonder that 25% of homeless people are veterans, who have served the county honorably?
Time and time again, I have seen H-1B visa holders gain the technical expertise and knowledge (should not they already have this); to only return to their mother countries and teach subordinates; who in turn come to American on other H-1B visas and repeat the cycle. This essentially locks out Americans, shuts down competition and kills any opportunity for advancement for Americans, like me, in the marketplace.
This system is on-going and our employment opportunities are rapidly decreasing. This situation is at the point where resume names with Jackson and Dingell are not even reviewed for possible employment opportunities, because the hiring manager is a foreign national.
Has not America already experienced enough pass employment discrimination practices?
Currently, I work with Tecumseh Products Company in Ann Arbor, MI., who has already announced plans to lay-off 160 workers in Jan-April timeframe, so that the company can "return to profitability”. I know that these positions are going to continued overseas locations in Brazil and India, for 1/3 the cost of labor.
At what point do American citizens, their lives, liberties and their pursuit of happiness become important to our governmental representatives and/or corporate leaders? That point should have been reached long before now, but it seems as there is more to give. This North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA ) Superhighway System and the North American Union appears to be a conduit for “mission creep” for our CEO President G. Bush.
I am not against immigration, but I am against the rapid decline of the "middle class" in America and the corporatism that is facilitating this decline.
Sir, please stop this attack on the American people and vote "YES" for (HCR)487.
Please turn back Corporatist George’s attempt to sell the rest of American, to foreign entities. We are hurting out here and wonder if our elected leaders will “step-up” and turn the tide in our favor.
Thank you and Best Regards,
William L. Jackson |
