To: Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors & San Mateo County Board of Supervisors
Please immediately reject any further consideration of a trail alignment along Alpine Road in San Mateo County to meet Stanford's recreational trail mitigation requirement for their General Use Permit agreement with Santa Clara County.
Extensive environmental studies and protracted public input sessions are not required for an alignment that so obviously fails to meet the basic requirement described in the GUP -- "Stanford shall dedicate easements for, develop, and maintain" a recreational trail "crossing Stanford lands". Alpine Road is unacceptable for consideration:
1. It's in the wrong county
2. It's largely on public right-of-way--you can’t dedicate what you don't own
3. It has little to no recreational trail value
4. It's unsafe, with dangerous driveway, roadway and freeway ramp crossings
5. It diminishes rather than enhances the affected community:
5.a. Creates conflicts between vehicles and “trail” users
5.b. Removes trees and adds impervious surface, increasing runoff into the creeks
5.c. Reduces privacy and security
Please support consideration of the Community Supported Trail alternative. It meets the requirements of the GUP.
1. It is in the right county
2. It is on the very edge of Stanford's developable land
3. It's better for the environment, requiring no new paving around sensitive habitat
4. It leverages existing trail footage in the Dish area
5. It raises no traffic or safety concerns
6. It provides high recreational value |
