caryl | gottlieb | | | I am painfully late, having only come across this now. I'm curious as the outcome as to Mr. Panse' career but I'm even more concerned about the fact that figure drawing could be perceived in such an ignorant fashion.

Megan | Dong | CA | US | As a student who studied figure drawing in high school, and who continued to take these core classes through college, I find these charges to be outrageous and ignorant. There is absolutely nothing sexual about nude figure drawing, and it is common knowledge among artists that it is a fundamental part of the art student's curriculum. Ridiculous.

jesse | needham | KS | US | our natural form should be celebrated in its biological excellence. it is sad for a school board to view it as pornography. this is hurting young minds.
| 1961 | Anthony | Waters | CA | US | I ask the Middletown School District Board of Education to reinstate Peter Panse as an instructor at Middletown High School. Figure drawing has been a crucial part of classical art education for at least three centuries. I've suggested the same thing to high school and college-age students. Every fellow professional I can think of has done the same. We all benefited enormously from our time spent in front of models, sketching and painting. Punishing Mr. Panse for his recommendations is akin to suspending a math teacher for suggesting a gifted student study quantum physics.
Please: the last thing we need in America right now is another School Board curbing students' learning out of fear, or ignorance, or both. |
Leo | Ackley | | FI | Students normally enroll in live model drawing classes as preparation for art school in this country. I have run such a course for 15 years. I have also taught similar courses in schools of architecture. Without live model drawing, art education is lost.(I am an American, and member of the Finnish Artist's Association.)
Lisa | Sterling | NC | US | As a high school art teacher with an MFA and NBPTS credentials I am in support of offering figure drawing classes to advanced art students. One would note that the art teachers have all had figure drawing classes in their training.
jim | fitzpatrick | MA | US | life drawing is the essence of good draughtsmanship. i too was a high school art teacher and advised my advanced students to sign up for sat. morning art courses at the massachusetts college of art. the course included life drawing
Michelle | McLeod | | AU | Unbelievable. But what can you expect from a system that eagerly TV broadcasts people beating, shooting and chopping up each other but disallows the viewing of a breast?

Alicia | Walker | NC | US | i think art is a huge part of our world all this teacher did was suggest this course they were not forced to go the only goal was to better the art students eventually during an art course they would be faced with nude models why not be prepared
Stacia | Drafahl | IA | US | Coming from a student, I think the charges are ridiculous and I personally would have found his mentioning of classes to be a wonderful opportunity and nothing of a sexual nature in the least.

Geoffrey | Warburton | | GB | Is this real? Might I suggest they fire the people who want to fire him? Why would they treat a respected educator in this appalling way?
Thomas | Wharton | NY | US | From my many years of study of both painting and drawing, I can categorically state that using nude models is standard practice. If the advanced students are planning to go on and study art, they will be definitely at a disadvantage without having done this earlier. They will be in competition with students from cities where this is standard practice and will, in effect, be behind the curve.

NFN | Kalyan | FL | US | There is nothing offensive about figure drawing. Are we now to ban football because players must take off their clothes before putting on uniforms? Figure drawing is central to understanding form and shading among other things. There is nothing sexual about it.
Anthony R. | Collins | VA | US | I think its crazy that an art teacher who is doing his job and trying to give the best possible tools to his pupils can be suspended because someone objected to him reccomending that his student take extra lessons. What is the world coming to!!
