| 1801 | Adele | Moore | FL | US | I am appalled at the narrowminded people in charge of a degenerating educational system. I was born and raised in the Northeast, thank goodness it was when real education mattered. I could take a hand in guiding my daughters to educate themselves when exposed to inferior teaching. I am a professional artist, and my surviving daughter is a successful Muralist now, having been an honors student in spite of the 'system'.
I hope America wakes up soon before we are the most ignorant country in the world. |
eddie | torres | NY | US | It seems that those who are against the teacher are not artists themselves. I wish I was given a nude modeling class when I was in my teens. I could have started my career earlier.
Pia | Peterson | RI | | As a professional artist I can state that there is nothing sexual about live figure drawing and it is an integral part of an art education and absurd for this man to be penalized.
Toni | Cutmore | | |
Lisa | Drostova | CA | US | I am a veteran art model, and this is absurd. Learning to draw from the figure is essential to the professional development of the artist.
De | Sebula | WV | US | I do not believe the teacher should be suspended. However; as an artist who has studied portraiture and the nude body, I also work in social services and can tell you that teens are not yet sophisticated enough to see the nude body as a work of art in a way that learned artists do. Therefore, drape the nude or by clothing the nude (possibly a less revealing swimsuite would work.)

Kate | Korman | VA | US | This is an absurd case of a school so unenlightened that it doesn't realize it has a mature teacher who is only trying to bring out the brilliance in his students. Shame on them for such a travesty.
john | long | OR | US | You have got to be kidding!
Eunice | Iniguez | FL | US | Mr. Panse should be reinstated and given a public apology. No one should be fired for doing being a good teacher.
Nichole | Tyner | SC | US |
KELLY | HIRAI | FL | US |
patricia | butler | NY | US | The drawing and study of the human nude is essential to an artist, whether abstract or realistic and the younger you start the better....its unfortunate that ignorance exists.
Pearl | Lipner | MI | | As the parent of an art student, I am highly offended by the thought that a non-artist would presume to judge a professional art teacher.
Constance | Ostlund | MN | US | This case seems to serve as a global awareness to the accredited reputation of the high school rather than the issues of the suspension.
Heather | Mathieson | MA | US | This whole thing is ridiculous! It is not about the teacher, it is about the ignorance of the non-artists. Mr Panse deserves an apology for this attack on his integrity.

carol | fortunato | NJ | US |
| 1821 | Betty | Lehnus | NM | US | One would think this battle had been fought. Eakins, etc .. in the last century (or the one before that!)
I am 63, and took my first life classes as a teenager in Chicago -- and many others over the ensuing years -- life drawing and sexual activity are not the same thing -- most art students struggle with accurate drawing of hands and feet! Breasts and butts are relatively easy! |
| 1822 | Pat | Moxley | WI | US | I also have had nude paintings censored from exhibit and competition settings.
It is outrageous simply because we all have naked bodies. Censorship doesn’t seem to be a problem when art work depicts horrific acts of violence. |
Chris | Moore | AZ | US | Every single successful professional artist I've talked to says the only way to learn to draw people is a life drawing class. I took one, and it's true. I wish I had taken one when I was still in high school.
Anonymous | Anonymous | | CA | I am appalled at the small mindedness of the "system". I was also shocked to discover that the "approved" art textbooks in the one of the BoE's in which I work, in Ontario, are printed in the US and do not have one nude work of art in them! As an art teacher of 41yrs, in four different countries, I am appalled at the insidious plague of the American moral minority. It is a sickness and it is very scary. Wake up America and look in the mirror-preferably without your clothes on. This is what God made and you want to hide its beauty away!
Anonymous | Anonymous | NY | US | When I was a high school student our art teacher arranged for us to draw the nude model in his studio. We needed permission from our parents: some gave permission, a small number did not. However, that was that, and the life modeling sessions went on, I participated along with many classmates, and we learned a lot about drawing. However, the art teacher was not crucified for organizing these sessions. I think Pete Panse is a highly respected professional and should be reinstated.

Martin | Doherty | PA | US | This action by the school board is one of the dumbest things I have heard of. Kudos to Pete Panse for trying to do the best by his students and create opportunities for them to advance in their field of study. What next - covering up the legs of the piano in the music class?
Alissandra | Seelaus | | |
Laura | West | CA | US |
Anonymous | Anonymous | TX | US | As an artist and teacher I fully support Mr. Pansen and applaud his dedication and service to his students. Figure drawing should be an important part of any serious art student's training. I can see making the class optional for highschool kids, but there is no merit to disciplining a teacher for doing his job.
Carol | Garner | MN | US | It's unbelievable that this would even be an issue. Reinstate Mr. Panse.
| 1836 | eliot | jackson | TX | US | This is typical of a school board.
I believe the teacher should be re-instated and indeed should be honored for fulfilling his obligations as a teacher. He is observing up and coming artists and in assisting them in preparing for the rela world and the potential for a wonderful career and education beyond high school and its uptight attitutes |
Anonymous | Anonymous | NJ | US | This is outrageous!!!!!!!! An outstanding teacher is being victimized. I hope all goes well for him.
Cristi | Lyon | CA | | Working from the nude figure is not only invaluable in developing drawing and observational skills, it helps to deepen understanding of our shared humanity.
Calen | Curley | WI | US | To pursue this abhorrent inquisition directed toward Mr. Panse in this particular instance any further would be a disgraceful failure of the American educational system and only work to support claims that public education in the United States is a doomed institution not worthy of public investment or support.
eric | ball | | GB | Most non-artists think nudes=sex, whereas it equates to the practice any prospective shouldn't avoid, it is an invaluable skill. When you do life drawing well you can draw almost anything.
Janet | Howard-Fatta | NY | US | Mr. Panse sounds like a GREAT teacher!!
Marilyn | Kirsch | | | I am getting very tired of stupidity and ignorance. There is nothing wrong with an art teacher suggesting that a student draw from a nude model. This suspension is preposterous.
John | Erickson | | |
Chris | Mellor | | GB | This is the 'nanny state' gone mad. Where are tomorrow's thinkers artists, philosophers, goin to come from when this kind of narrow minded bigotry is the model we present to our young people. Grow up!
Michael | Connors | NY | US | This is absurd. Figure drawing is absolutely essential for developing artist. Not to mention that it seems that most people are delusional about what teenagers are doing without adult supervision. Learning to draw a nude is extremely complicated and has absolutely nothing to do with pervision and everything to do with depicting the most complicated forms in the most appealing and accurate way.
Robert | Feinstein | | |
Jan | Dennison | TX | US | figure drawing has always been an important and nescessary skill for the emerging artist
