We, the undersigned, as members of the Romanian community in the UK or their supporters, petition the Government to end its current system of discrimination against Romanian workers. We note that the UK does not require work permits for nationals of any EU member state prior to 1 January 2007, and request these same rights of access be granted to Romanian citizens. It is clear from its eight months of operation that the worker restrictions have proved complex, costly and counter-productive. We note that the system of restrictions cannot be administered effectively by the Border and Immigration Agency; that it will cost the British taxpayer at least £3m in 2007; and that it drives Romanian workers on to the black market, so forcing them into unsafe conditions and making them targets for exploitation. In light of the very low numbers of Romanians coming to the UK since 1 January 2007, we urge the government to end the discrimination of its work permit regime now, and allow Romanians the same chance to contribute fully to the UK economy as are afforded to other EU nationals.
