PETITION OF PROTEST TO THE US DEPARTMENT OF STATE!!
We, the undersigned, urge you to take immediate action to avert the new plot prepared in Ethiopia to subvert democracy in the nation that has already suffered a lot from the merciless dictatorship of Meles Zenawi. We want you to know that the May 2005 election in our country was falsified, a fact registered in the EU-EOM 2005 report on elections in Ethiopia. While the official results showed the victory of the EPRDF, the ruling party, the real winner was the CUDP, the opposition party that enjoys the support of the majority of Ethiopian people. The courageous patriots from the CUDP dared to protest Zenawi’s manipulations, ending in prisons where they are still kept in inhuman conditions.
At this time when democracy in our nation is in deadly danger, and the government may resort to actions that will take more human lives, the US Department of State has chosen to side with Zenawi. The recent proposal to create a surrogate opposition party, the CUDP, that will accomplish a fake reconciliation with Zenawi’s party, is humiliating to the Ethiopians who risk their lives in the fight against the regime. The people of Ethiopia will reject this shameful plot that the US is trying to realize for the sake of supporting the dictator with a terrifying human rights record from Amnesty International. The pressure put on MPs joining the forged opposition by the US Department of State has nothing to do with democratic procedures. We know who our real leaders are, and we will keep demanding their release as long as they remain in prison.
Their unlawful detention was only briefly mentioned by U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Ambassador Vicki J. Huddleston during her press conference on April 5, 2006, Addis Ababa. We believe that her action of the situation in Ethiopia was premature and lacked understanding of the issues involved and individuals. We want to communicate to the US authorities that the Ethiopians will never reconcile with the substitution of the true CUDP for a surrogate entity sponsored by Meles Zenawi and the US Department of State. Although Ethiopians are friendly and tolerant people, they will not compromise when the whole political process in their country is at stake. The entity put together by Temesgen Zewdie, Dean of the New Generation University and Ayele Chamiso, violates the will of the imprisoned leaders and oppresses the freedom of the Ethiopian people who have made their choice in the May 2000 election.
This choice proved difficult to uphold and led to large-scale abuse of human rights, with Meles Zenawi spilling the blood of innocent people whose only crime is their strive for democracy. H.R. 4423, Ethiopia Consolidation Act of 2005, is a great milestone on the way toward democracy in our nation. However, this victory can be reversed by the treacherous actions of Ethiopian and American officials in Addis Ababa. We ask the US Department of State to immediately stop the subversive conspiracy supporting the blood-thirsty terrorist government of Meles Zenawi and exhibit true commitment to democracy.
The USA, knows perfectly well that Ethiopia is on the edge of chaos, yet it quietly decides to hide its loyalty to the worst abuser of human rights, Meles Zenawi and his regime. Ethiopia and Ethiopian people have suffered for too many years, and over the years America tolerated the human rights violations committed by the ruling regime of Ethiopia.
And now, the USA, in violation of all diplomatic protocols against meddling, supports the criminal government of Meles Zenawi to install his version of CUDP. To put it mildly, this is illegal and a crime against the will of the people and the will of the real CUDP and its imprisoned leaders!!
Therefore, we Ethiopians, around the world ask the US department to stop insulting the intelligence of our people, to stop humiliating Ethiopians, who risk their lives in the fight against the regime!!
STOP THE SUBVERSIVE CONSPIRACY SUPPORTING THE BLOOD-THIRSTY TERRORIST TO CREATE HIS AND YOUR VERSION OF CUDP!! MAY GOD HELP YOU TO DO THE RIGHT THING! MAY GOD HELP YOU TO PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH!!
