We strongly protest the biased and propagandistic series of postings on the "Freud Today" section of The Freud Museum's website, www.Freud.org.UK. Among these are articles entitled "The Arab-Israeli Conflict," "Holocaust Memorial Day," "Pro-Arab" and "New Jewish Settlers." We are outraged to see the blatant misuse of Freud's name to promote a tendentious, political point of view. Such a malicious and misleading presentation is an outrage to thoughtful people.
It is certainly legitimate to examine Freud's writings to explore his own Jewish identity, to theorize about religious behavior, and attempt to understand his opinions about the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. It is unconscionable, however, to use The Freud Museum's website and to use Freud's words, ripped from historical context, to ridicule, derogate and slander Israel. It represents political sentiment, not scholarly thought.
As a scholarly world center for psychoanalytic studies, The Freud Museum has a special duty to use its name responsibly. The posting of such blatantly partisan political opinions on its official website constitutes a failure and abuse of its educational mission and does a disservice both to the scholarly community and to the public that trustingly turns to The Freud Museum for what is believed to be impartial scholarship.
We condemn these irresponsible postings on The Freud Museum website and urge The Freud Museum to remove the offensive articles and monitor future pieces with more care. All articles should be clearly labeled as to date and to source of the opinion expressed, and articles that reflect an individual’s personal or political perspective should invite commentary and criticism.
PLEASE NOTE THAT AS OF JULY 28TH, WITH 408 SIGNATURES, WE HAVE DECIDED TO CLOSE DOWN THIS PETITION. WE ARE GRATIFIED THAT THE FREUD MUSEUM HAS REVISED THE WEBSITE AND MODIFIED SOME OF THE MOST OFFENSIVE CONTENT. WE URGE THE FREUD MUSEUM TO USE THEIR WEBISTE MORE WISELY AND JUDICIOUSLY. |
