The petition

We would like you to address the problem of traveling magazine sales crews. Because these crews are unregulated, workers are subjected to long hours for low pay, and abusive and dangerous working conditions. Many of the children and young men and women on these crews have been the victims of murders, rapes, assaults, robberies, and fatal vehicle accidents.

We would like you to support regulations that mandate the following:
1) Working hours and conditions consistent with American legal requirements for hourly and salaried employees.

2) Mandatory criminal records checks and drug screening for crew members and their managers.

3) Redefining or removing the "independent contractor" status of the salespeople and managers so that sales crew companies will be held legally responsible for the working conditions of their crews. Make crew companies responsible for worker safety under OSHA and state requirements.

4) The mandatory payment of a standard fee for a return trip fare to the home of any employee who has decided to terminate employment.

We feel that the addition and enforcement of these regulations will enhance the safety of these workers and the general public.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and support
