The southern flounder is according to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD), the third most popular game fish on the coast, only behind redfish and speckled trout. Despite their popularity, flounder are not listed as a “gamefish” and face commercial harvest by the hundreds of thousands annually and get hit hard by the shrimping industry as bycatch. That is why their numbers have declined and the overall quality of the fishery is a shadow of what it used to be. This petition aims to get TPWD and the TPWD Commission to form a panel of recreational and commercial anglers, shrimpers, fishing guides and chambers of commerce to work out a new management plan for the species, which would include boosting efforts to form a stocking program and considering listing the species as a gamefish. |
