Do you know what is in the food you are feeding your family? Would you knowingly feed your family fish contaminated with fungicides, heavy metals and antibiotics? Or how about a can of soup or vegetables if you knew the ingredients were from a country that used pesticides that were banned in Canada?
The Business Professional Women's Club of Greater Moncton Inc. is lobbying to change Canadian food labelling regulations. We strongly feel that current "Made in Canada /Product of Canada" food labelling regulations are misleading and unclear.
It is a time of year when we gather together with family and friends to celebrate the holiday season, and food plays an important part in the festivities. So we feel this is an important time to draw attention to the safety of the food we are eating.
It is also a crucial time, as the federal government plans to change food labelling regulations as of December 31st 2008. However, these changes will not go far enough in educating Canadians about what is in the food they are feeding their families.
Honesty and clarity in Canadian food labelling is the best holiday present this government can give to families!
We believe that the only solution is for your Government to clarify its food labelling and food safety regulation standards by implementing the following:
1. Clearly identify on all food labels exactly which countries the entire food item’s ingredients were grown, harvested, raised and processed. That is, the country/countries of origin of all food content and the country/countries of origin of all processors and packers.
2. Implement real/substantial penalties on processors who breach safety standards to ensure safe products are reaching our store shelves so that we can ensure our families are eating safe Canadian food.
Will these new measures be voluntary as is the current practice? They need to be mandatory if Food Safety is to be taken seriously!
