Petition to the Pompton Lakes School Board
We, the undersigned, are petitioning the school board and the District Superintendent to adjust the 2005-2006 budgets to reflect the continuing commitment to our children’s education.
We are aware of the constraints as a result of the new laws regarding budget increases. However, we feel that there should be an attempt on the board’s part to adjust all areas of the budget to reflect the financial hardship facing the district.
We are aware that there are contracts which prohibit any adjustment to health insurance & salaries of teachers, custodians and support staff. When struggling to make up a $1,787,790 gap in the budget, it is important that any increase in spending be ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.
That being said, we feel that the administration should forego any increases in their salaries for this upcoming year to off set some of the cut suggested by the board. We are not asking to have jobs eliminated, only that all administrators keep their salaries the same. This would save the district approximately $109,000.
Since a portion of money from the second question is to cover the upgrading of the school’s library systems, we feel that to cut the staff in our district’s libraries would be counter-productive. We must encourage our students to extend their learning beyond the classroom. To cut the services and/or personnel within the libraries will only make this task more difficult. Research proves that there is a direct correlation between quality school library programs and a student’s achievement.
We all know cuts will have to be made and that further investigation into spending is crucial, but a show of good faith from our board is imperative for our continued support. |
