The petition

Help put an end to Petland's greed by protesting the sale of commercially bred puppies and kittens.

Let them know you will NOT support their stores until they exclusively support legitimate rescue organizations.

Petland has no right to treat these animals as inventory; often greatly discounting prices as the puppies and kittens age and become less desirable.

They claim to care about the animals, and yet force them to live in small wire bottom cages. Big enough to meet the minimum requirements and yet small and bleak enough to get the sympathy of buyers. On their website they proudly state that “Petland’s custom-designed kennels are larger in all dimensions than recommended by the Canadian Council on Animal Care.” What they don’t tell you is that the purpose of the CCAC is to set the standard of care and use for experimental animals.

Petland works hard to portray an image of kindness in an effort to hide their highly unethical business practices. Their staff are well trained to churn out the same generic responses to any questions that are posed, and even worse, lie to cover up for the company’s blatant misreprestation of the "products" they sell.

On the Petland website they clearly state that “Our pets come from professional and hobby breeders who have years of experience in raising quality family pets” and in the store they’re quick to say that their puppies all come from “reputable local breeders”. However, when pressed further they claim that the puppies often come from “accidental litters”, beginner breeders and people that breed occasionally. What happened to the “years of experience” that people are paying for?

Even more disturbingly, the remaining puppies are bought from large scale breeding operations. They claim to enforce the Code of Practice for Canadian Kennel Operations, but when you consider that the Petland stores themselves don’t adhere to theses standards, it’s hard to believe the requirements are ever met.

Responsible breeders of any animal would never use the retail channel to sell their litters.

Quote from a previous Petland employee:

“Several years ago, as a teenager who loves animals I got a job at a Petland in Langley BC. In the brief two weeks I worked there 3 dogs died from distemper. It took approx 5 days after the first pup was diagnosed to decide to bleach all water bottles and "quarantine" another pup that was exhibiting symptoms. All they did with that little golden retriever was move him to a tiny wire cage about a meter away from the display pups and cover the cage with a blanket so the poor thing was left in the dark. When I was first hired I was told how to act like I was cleaning a shelf etc. and slowly approach customers. We had a corny script we had to say and if the boss was around and we didn't stick to it he would get pissed off. I reported what was going on but nothing was done. I felt helpless and sickened by this store who supposedly promotes responsible pet ownership.”

1. Sign the petition!

2. Stop supporting Petland. Refuse to buy ANY product there until they stop selling puppies and kittens. Better yet, tell the manager exactly why you won’t support them!

3. Monitor the stores. If you observe poor conditions, keep notes, possibly take photos, and send them our way. Also collect names and numbers of people who have had negative experiences dealing with Petland.

4. Email boycottpetland@hotmail.com to get more information and help organize protests in your area.
