The petition
Stu-di-o: (stoo-dee-oh) noun, plural di-os.
1. the workroom or atelier of an artist, as a painter or sculptor.
2. a room or place for instruction or experimentation in one of the performing arts.
3. a room or set of rooms specially equipped for broadcasting radio or television programs, making phonograph records, filming motion pictures, etc.
Although the island of Martha's Vineyard has many wonderful educational arts programs for the young and old, many of these programs do not have a suitable space to call home. In early 2007 many of these like minded groups came together with the idea of turning the old Edgartown School, which has sat vacant for the last five years, into performance and work space for community use. In August of 2007 we presented this concept to Ms Patricia Neal, truly an icon in American Theater and Film, and asked if we might honor her, a longtime resident of Edgartown, by naming such a space in her honor. It is our hope that once completed the studio will include a fully equipped state of the art theater with rehearsal and work space for artists and art organizations.
