PETITION
FOR ACCOUNTABILITY WITHIN
OUR CATHOLIC CHURCH
The petition below will be distributed to the U.S.
Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) at their
meeting in Baltimore, MD on November 13-16, 2006
as well as separately to each bishop of a diocese.
We ask that you join with us in this demand for
a Church that is truly accountable to its members.
|
| Voice of the Faithful has
launched a nationwide Campaign for Accountability, calling
our Church to be accountable and transparent in all areas
of finance and administration and calling Catholics to
hold our Church and its leadership accountable for the
protection of children and the validation of survivors
of clergy sexual abuse.
We, the undersigned, urgently request that the U.S.
Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) join us in this
effort to build a more accountable Church by doing
the following:
-
Fully
fund and complete the USCCB study (“Causes & Context”),
to determine the underlying structural and cultural
causes of the clergy sexual abuse scandal—and
act on the recommendations in a timely manner.
-
Create
a national database of credibly accused priests to help protect countless
children from further
abuse and to validate the claims of those who have
been abused.
-
Achieve
financial accountability by ensuring that finance
councils in each diocese and every parish are
genuine and effective; and require the regular release
of all financial documents necessary to ensure financial
transparency.
