252 Rogie GeorgeAs a student of FAU and a government employee, I’m very disappointed in the lack of action taken by the university in this situation. Everyone has the right to freedom of speech, not only the protesters, but the onlookers that were at the lecture, as well as the people passing by. But the moment, an onlooker spat on the protester, it became not only a verbal conflict but a physical one, and should be seen as a SERIOUS act of bigotry and hate. With that being said, the person being accused of this act, was not only an onlooker but and employee of FAU. The news papers say that the employee was not on duty at the time of the incident, but they were wearing a work uniform, and were on school grounds. Even with that said, what gives them the right to spit on someone? And what gives the school the right to act as though, this never happened? That employee represents FAU, and their actions reflect on the university. By not taking action the school only supports the act and accepts it as their stand as well. As a minority I faced racism all the time growing up. It is just sad to see that the same educational system that teaches us to take action and stop the hate, will not take their own advice.

268 Heather WardA University is supposed to be a safe place for students to come and learn, grow, and expand as people. Every person is equal and has the right to express themselves unless it is harmful to somebody else. The student protesters were practicing under free speech and did nothing wrong. However, the professor DID do harm. If FAU does not do its part to eliminate these occurances, and make up for those that have, it goes against one of the biggest things students learn in university--that each and every person is equal. Instead, the university will be saying something completely different: that it is ok to discriminate against someone just because of their skin color, religion, ethnicity, race, and/or nationality. That isn't what I want in my university.
269 AnonymousJust for clarification: The prepetrator of this was not a professor of FAU, she was, however, an employee of FAU. After the incident, the student said she would not press charges so long as the lady apologized. She did apologized (there were police there, she pretty much had no choice). However, this, in no way, absolves the university from it's responsibily, which it has completely ignored. Not only have they not condemned the action of the employee, they even released some statements about it's "Investigation" of the incident, without even speaking to the student! Since then, they have spoken with the student, however it's too late. Their statement was "There were different accounts as to the intensity of the exchange...". What differing accounts were they talking about?? They hadn't even spoken with the student at that time!! Shame on the FAU administration.

276 Mubarak KazanThis action seem to be a hate crime and should be dealth with accordingly. All people, irrespective of one's religion, race or creed should be protected under our laws. Our laws should not "pick and choose" who to protect.

279 Thais TorresAs a member of a minority group and a student at FAU, it disgusts me to learn that someone could be treated so shamefully by an employee at this college.
280 AnonymousThe school must be providing such environment for an employee to feel certain enough to spit on a student. The university clearly continues to encourage racism by not taking any serious actions against this horrific act.

288 Jessi ChoeThat employee, and those who support her actions, should be required to apologize publicly, since her uncivil act was in reaction to a public protest. Hate-full employees such as her, no matter what side of the issue (s)he may represent, do not belong on the payroll of college campuses.
