The initial OKCPS school calendar from the first meeting shows school starting on August 29, ending on June 5, with record day on June 6. First semester would end January 13.
The calendar above fails in two ways: semester does not end by Christmas break and students have to return after Memorial Day.
The proposed calendar at the meeting suggested teachers return on August 15, school start on August 18, semester end before Christmas, and school end before Memorial Day.
As quickly as possible, our views need to be heard. Most of the teachers I've spoken with definitely want the semester to end at Christmas Break and school to end before Memorial Day. Further, teachers see no need for students to be out of school the entire week of Thanksgiving (Central Office said teachers “liked it.” My question was—how do they know??).
Below is a calendar I proposed for next year. Look it over and see what you think. You certainly don’t have to agree with every day of it. But, MOST IMPORTANTLY, if you agree with ending the first semester before Christmas break and ending school before Memorial weekend sign the petition. Teachers need to be heard. We'll take all the signatures back to the committee meeting.
Semester 1 – Begin August 18, 2004—Teachers return August 15, 2005
- End December 21, 2005--most districts are holding class part of this week
- 84 days (one will be assigned as Parent-Conference Day)
- Record Day, January 3, 2006.
Semester 2 – Begin January 4, 2006
- End May 23, 2006
- 91 days (one will be assigned as Parent-Conference Day; 1 PD day built-in)
- Record Day, May 24, 2006. This would also allow for snow days to be added at the end of the year, if needed.
This current school year calendar is also not even in the number of days per semester as you might have noticed on my calendar. That would be ideal but is difficult to do to get semester to end by Christmas. |
