To NOTTINGHAM CITY COUNCIL
From RESIDENTS and BUSINESSES IN the CITY OF NOTTINGHAM
Keep Nottingham City and the rest of the county free. No road pricing here. No new parking taxes. No new taxes on business and commuters. No government bribes to coerce travellers onto inconvenient and expensive public transport.
The Workplace Parking Levy would be a very inconvenient administrative nightmare for businesses.
Besides the direct tax paid to the council, there would be other costs.
Even small businesses exempt from the levy would still have to register all their parking spaces, and notify the council if they removed spaces or created new ones, or even if they changed the use of their own parking.
The annual charge for each space has to be paid even if some spaces are not used every day.
Workers could easily face charges as high as £10 per week or more, as companies try to recover the tax and administration costs.
Road pricing is not about reducing congestion, but pricing private cars off the road. It damages business, commuting and social activity. It hurts most those least able to pay.
The levy would require a vast expensive system to monitor every business parking space. It woudl be an intolerable interference with our freedom.
This new tax from Nottingham Council can only drive companies to abandon the city and move elsewhere.
Businesses and drivers pay enough taxes already.
We call on Nottingham Council to abandon its plans for this new parking space tax on business and commuting.
If the council is determined to press ahead, then let the residents and businesses of Nottingham decide in a fair referendum whether they want the Workplace Parking Levy.
This petition will close on 15-9-07, and then be sent to Nottingham City Council.
