Petition to Deny Indigo Dunes

The petition

PETITION TO DENY INDIGO DUNES
We the undersigned residents of Virginia Beach OPPOSE current development plans of Indigo Dunes on Pleasure House Point for the following reasons:

* Size and density of development along coastal wetlands and
creeks threatens water quality and fragile ecosystem and violates
the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act. This development eliminates
the largest remaining section of land, ~69 acres, in the Bayfront
area identified for purchase by the City as Open Space in accordance
with the City’s Outdoors Plan.

* Adding 1,096 housing units (essentially doubling the number of
homes in Ocean Park) to the most densely populated area in the City
will strain current infrastructure and degrade safety for motorists,
bicyclists and pedestrians along Shore Drive, the deadliest road in
the entire City. This development will add more than 8,000 car trips
per day onto Shore Drive and will further crowd already congested
roads and dangerous intersections, adversely affecting quality of life
and safety along the entire Shore Drive corridor.

* This excessive development will create new demands for costly
fire, rescue and education services. The city's planned safety and
infrastructure improvements along Shore Drive only address
existing unacceptable conditions and have neither been built nor
funded.

WE THEREFORE URGE THE CITY COUNCIL TO DENY THE CURRENT REQUEST TO CHANGE ZONING AND ALLOW CONDITIONAL USE PERMITS IN PLEASURE HOUSE POINT AS PROPOSED BY THE INDIGO DUNES PROJECT.
