I for one am sick & tired of hearing the term "fairway metal" used on golf broadcasts every weekend. If we as a group show that golfers find the term overused and usually "forced", perhaps we can bring the term "fairway wood" back into use.
No they aren't made of wood anymore but "iron" isn't exactly a descriptive term for the "irons" players use either (yes I know that iron is used to make steel but the carbon levels are different and stainless steel contains chromium & nickel) but they still say "5 iron".
Many of the golf magazines (ie Golf Digest) still use "Fairway Woods" when describing these clubs and if we don't act soon, that could change also. Major manufacturers of golf equipment (ie. Ping, Taylor Made, and Callaway) continue to call them "woods" yet every week "3 Metal" is shoved down our throats while watching TV.
After we get a bunch of signatures this petition is going to anybody that will look at it (and I have a pretty decent database of industry email addresses) as well as CBS, ABC, ESPN, TGC, NBC, BET, USA, TNT, & TBS (you get the picture).
So join the cause. It's not a great cause. More of something to laugh at really... but it is a cause nonetheless.
After just 72 hours of the petition being live(5/7/04), we have around 215 signatures. |
