After much citizen concern about a “Big Box” store going into the area between East Cherokee, Hickory Road, and Hwy 140 , the “Hickory Flat Triangle”, an ordinance was passed on April 4th called the “Big Box” ordinance that prohibits stores over 80,000 square feet on a 2-lane road or within ˝ mile of schools. This ordinance is to protect areas that can not handle the congestion and other issues that a “Big Box” store will bring. On April 3rd, a developer known to be Wal-Mart’s development partner filed a request for a land disturbance permit (LDP). An LDP is the first step toward eventually obtaining a building permit. The plan filed with that application shows an 184,000 square-foot store with the entrance directly across East Cherokee Drive from Hickory Flat Elementary. The developer is now claiming to be grandfathered/exempt from the new ordinance.
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge Cherokee County leaders to be diligent to defend the “Big Box” ordinance and prohibit the building of a “Big Box” store in the Hickory Flat Triangle. A store this large combined with the other retail development presents a nuisance and threat to the public’s safety and general well-being. |

The Cherokee Coalition for Responsible Growth or "CCRG" was started in April 2004 by residents of Macedonia who were fighting a high-density development in their neighborhood. From this process, a long-term coalition formed of residents from the surrounding areas. Our mission is to be an ongoing, organized group to help assure that the community of Macedonia, Union Hill, Hickory Flat, Woodstock and surrounding areas reflect an appropriate and responsible land use plan of commercial, residential and rural transitions balanced with fiscally sound government services.
