Whereas the Board of Administrators of the Tulane Educational Fund, Inc. announced on December 8, 2005 its intention to dissolve Newcomb College, the coordinate women's undergraduate college of Tulane University, by merging it into a consolidated new Undergraduate College;
and
Whereas the Board of Administrators of the Tulane Educational Fund, Inc. has a commitment to serve the practical and literary education of women according to its Charter and Bylaws
and
Whereas women make up more than 50 percent of the undergraduate student body of Tulane University, attendance at single-sex institutions is on the rise nationally at elementary and secondary levels, and the number of women enrolling in colleges nationwide is on the rise;
and
Whereas the true legacy and traditions of Newcomb College are community, scholarship, and leadership developed in a female-led institution, and cannot be wholly duplicated in a co-educational environment;
and
Whereas the current student body of Newcomb College has expressed its explicit desire to see the continuation of a degree-granting women's college;
and
Whereas we, the Undersigned, believe that the Board of Administrators was required by circumstances to make decisions with incomplete information due to the exigencies of Hurricane Katrina having prevented communication with students, faculty, and alumni of Newcomb College or Tulane University or consultation with independent professionals with a breadth of expertise in higher education;
and finally
Whereas we believe that the plan to merge Newcomb College with Tulane College will have a negative effect on student enrollment, faculty recruitment, student and faculty retention, alumni giving, and the long-term good reputation of Tulane University;
We, the Undersigned, hereby petition the Board of Administrators of the Tulane Educational Fund, Inc., to:
Amend the Renewal Plan to include two undergraduate colleges for Tulane University: Newcomb College for Undergraduate Women and Tulane College, or any other chosen name, for Undergraduate Men. We further petition that all students currently enrolled in Newcomb College be allowed to graduate with degrees from Newcomb College of Tulane University.
