The plan for the New Sewickley Township community center has been in development for several years. The proposal includes renovating the existing Unionville Elementary School into a new community and municipal complex which will serve the residents of the township in many ways.
The design for the renovated building includes ample space for meeting rooms and gathering areas. Residents who attended Unionville Elementary School will remember the gym location but won’t recognize it after its restoration for community use. Preliminary plans also include space for a library and indoor walking track.
Additionally, the building will house the township offices and police department. Anyone who visits the present municipal building can see township growth reflected in the offices and halls. Currently, offices have been squeezed in corners and other areas. The wiring for computers and other electronic items needs to be updated to keep inline with today's technology standards.
This existing building will become the home of the road department which has also seen its share of growth through the years. Equipment storage and office space is needed for the department.
The project is an important one for the future of New Sewickley Township. Corporate, private and government grants, bonds and smart financial planning all play important roles in helping the community center become a source of pride for New Sewickley residents. Our representatives in Harrisburg are also aware of the project and ready to lend support.
At a public meeting earlier this year, the Board of Supervisors announced they have not decided whether the project will continue. They sought feedback from the residents regarding this project through the township newsletter. However, only two dozen replies were received. The consensus is that many residents simply do not know of the project.
Planning by the previous Board of Supervisors was well underway. Finalizing the financial aspects of the project was the last facet of the planning phase. The 2005 and 2006 budgets were planned with this project in development. The budget was able to handle costs and payments associated with this project without raising taxes or any further burden to taxpayers. A committee of township residents formed to see this project to completion could verify this fact and insure that the financial standings remain solid.
